How the MedSend National Scholars Program Is Overcoming Barriers for Doctors to Serve in Africa

MedSend National Scholars Program

The MedSend National Scholars Program is helping train doctors across Africa to serve in places where healthcare is urgently needed.

On a recent trip to Kenya, we had the opportunity to visit Kabarak University and record an interview with Dr. Belyse Arakaza, a graduate of the program currently working at AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kenya, whose story reflects both resilience and the impact of donor support.

A Story of Loss and Provision

“To have the support of MedSend… was one of the expressions of the fatherhood of God—that He will always provide for me, even if I don’t know how.”

Belyse grew up in Burundi after losing both of her parents at a young age. Her path forward was uncertain and education itself was not guaranteed.

And yet, she continued.

Step by step, she moved through school, eventually entering medical training—without knowing how she would sustain it. For Belyse, MedSend’s financial support was a tangible reminder that she was not alone.

How the MedSend National Scholars Program Made a Way

The MedSend National Scholars Program exists to remove financial barriers for doctors like Belyse, allowing them to pursue residency training in mission hospitals.

For Belyse, that support was decisive.

“I could not have done family medicine if this support had not come through.”

Because of MedSend support:

  • She completed her residency training
  • She no longer had to divide her time between work and her training
  • She was able to focus fully on becoming a physician

“I was able to attend my residency without worrying about what my child would eat… or school fees… it was everything.”

From Training to Calling

Today, Belyse is not only practicing medicine; she is serving with purpose.

“I am serving God today, beyond giving medication to people… because you gave.”

This is the broader impact of the MedSend National Scholars Program: Doctors are trained not only in medicine but are also equipped to serve their communities with compassion and faith.

Flourishing by Design: Imagining Medical Missions for 2040

Our predecessors faithfully built institutions that have served for generations. Our challenge is different. We have inherited those institutions into a world they could scarcely have imagined. Population growth, urbanization, changing disease patterns, financial pressures, conflict, climate shocks, and technological change are reshaping healthcare across low- and middle-income countries.

Drawing on new data about the Christian health ecosystem, strategic consultations with global and African Christian health leaders, and field experience across Africa and Asia, this session explores what it will take for Christian health ministries to flourish by 2040.

Together we’ll imagine what it will take for Christian health ministries to flourish by 2040, strengthening resilient institutions, cultivating exceptional local leadership, and mobilizing a broader range of Christian expertise from medicine and nursing to governance, education, engineering, finance, data science, and technology.

How can Christian health ministries become indispensable partners in building resilient health systems that reflect the compassion and hope of Christ? The legacy of the next generation of medical missions will be measured not only by the number of missionaries sent, but by the resilience, flourishing, and Christ-centered witness of systems they strengthen.
